Progressive Views of Marriage
As time progresses, views, beliefs and tradition begin to change as the minds of society evolve and adapt. So the question is could the sacred and tradition views of Anglican theology progress with society? As it would seem as the opinions of the general public are communicated, the Anglican church begin to change their thinking on the tradition beliefs of the definition of marriage, and who qualifies to participate. Reverend Rod Winterton of St Luke's Church, Warwick, claims that views of the church need to be updated, "The Anglican church is far from homophobic" says Winterton, which demonstrably reveals the link between the opinion of the public and the action of the church. It would also seem that the religious aspects of marriage are diminishing due to the decrease in religious ceremonies, “Marriages rarely happen in the church anymore" claims Winterton. The amount of religious marriages in Australia has decreased from 56.9% in 1994 to 25.8% in 2014 (i.e. A 31.1% decrease (Statistics, 2014). So people are less inclined to follow the teachings of religion, and prefer to treat marriage as they see fit.
